Cuts and Freida's notes

TOWN 1
There is a patch

TOWN 8
Of bright white skin

BELEN
In the shape of his hand

TOWN 7
Emblazoned on her belly.
LUIS holds Ailen in his arms.  The white PALM print burns bright on her stomach. TOWN takes basin to church.

ALAMAR
Then the healer
Moises crosses then exits

WILMER
Walks and walks away.
His silhouette appears on the scrim.  HE shrinks until he disappears.

EUGENIO
No one’s seen him since.
Monica takes Ailen out of her husband’s arms.

MONICA
And I keep my promise
Whispers in her hear

MONICA
Remind her how she got her mark.
She kisses the mark on Ailen’s stomach.

MONICA
But Luis hasn’t said a word since.
Luis sits on the floor, motionless.

MONICA
He sits in front of the washer all day. His eyes moving in small circles willing it to work.
.Luis stares at the washer DSL
Monica whispers in her hear and hands Ailen to Eugenio who baptizes Ailen from the basin. Then he holds the baby up.

TOWN 6
Moises seems to have taken the plague with him.

TOWN 5
We wait in fear of the day it might return.

TOWN 4
The pilgrims have stayed….

TOWN 3
Breathing new life in San Isidro
The TOWN converges into a single mass that keens, prays, and breathes as one.

The TOWN pulls the clinic door out from itself, thrusts it into the light.  The PALM prints on the door burn bright.

Freida clinic 1
Everyone
Diction
Remember that we can only have 5 people per UIL rules to be site crew.  Any more and we will be disqualified.
SO, people who change clothes backstage need to tell Taylor E, Clay, and Kate A.  DO THIS NOW
Also, what about painting the Medical table a blue?
DICTION
Water – We must see it in everything everyone does.
Too slow at the beginning.  Two people – stand in the back and clap.  Girls can dance with girls.  I want this to be a celebration.  Dancing is second nature to these people and they HUNGER for it. Ramzi – choose a partner or dance by yourself in the middle.  I want this to be joyous!
FEARFUL OF THE GUNS!
Our freezes need work.
Town
Throw in some anger at the radio being demolished.
QUIET while other scenes are going on.
If the light is on you – move – you can move Down stage or left stage.
Villagers move DSC and Stage right while Eugenio and Moises are in first vehicle.
Work on the windows – smoothly picking up and discarding them.
We need to work on vocal variety.  The trouble with choruses – we also saw this in middle school this year is that they have a tendency to have the same cadence, inflection, etc.
Everyone – bigger movements when the soldiers come – men protect women, women protect each other.  More reaction to the soldiers.
Breathe more.
Be more frightened when they take Belen away.
Dancers – LOVED the slow cumbia dancing in the dark.
Moises
Wait until the radio announcer says his amnesty line BEAT then cross to radio.   Look back at the radio and look back at the town.
Do we need the hat rack?
SLOW down and project more.  Freida knows the script as well as I do.  The judges will not.  They will read it once at best.
YOU MUST WASH YOUR HANDS – it is an OCD thing. Continue to have audience see your decision to help Belen – Maybe a last HUG before rushing out.
Look in all directions for the soldiers.
Town, Belen and Moises
Town in their lines need to look USC(right) at the medical facility and see Belen and Moises merge from behind the scrim with bloody clothes and hands.   Moises stops to wash his hands. Belen is visibly disturbed and keeps looking at her hands until DSL at the house.
Soldiers and hurt boy
WE MUST HAVE PEOPLE NOISES ONE FOOT BEFORE THE SCRIM  AND PEOPLE NOISES AS YOU CARRY THE PLANK OUT.  I REALLY LIKED THE NO PLANK IN SIGHT.
Eugenio

Moises and Belen
At the beginning of the show, leave the stretcher behind the scrim area.
Moises and Eugenio
Spend some time together.  We need to see a solid friendship at the beginning.
Monica and Luis
Heavy breathing = passionate relationship.
Work on throwing down scene. Monica, you need a purse, diaper bag, etc for the traveling.
Work on the sexy parts.
More flirting between you two.
Belen
Belen, work on making the speech about eyes bleeding more meaning ful.
Don’t rush your lines.
Luis
More levels to your character.  Deep breath before coming in second time.
You have a weird connection to the washer.  What does it symbolize for you?
Monica
Measured How did you pay for the washer – the second time.
Lights
We will get all the cues down. However, during the second dance scene – bring lights up a little more on them.
Sound
Guns down.
Stage lights

Guitar
I need to write when to play the guitar and when not to play the guitar.  We also need to play with the volume.  I’ll get the lines to you.
Singer
Great job – want you to sing more.  We will find areas.
Eugenio
More work on your break down.  You need to be tormented.

  1. I think there are a lot of cool and different elements we can add that will take this show over the edge. Everyone be brainstorming and thinking of ways to elevate the show. I will work on chemistry and amping up mine and Colin’s scenes. Towns people, make sure y’all get together and read and reread until you can get the lines perfect. It will make it easier to get through and help you all not sound the same if everyone knows their lines.

  2. Everyone needs to over do their words and speak louder. Diction is one of the things that can be very easily fixed! If we have no words, we have no show. I’ll make sure to get me and some of the others out of Luis and Monica’s light when it’s their scene. The town should get together and practice more breathing together and dancing as well.

  3. Our inflections in our voices stems from our characterization. If we know more about our characters and who we are it will be present in our voices and will differentiate us. Work hoard and the type of person your character is. Do they talk slow or fast-paced? What emotions do they feel in each scene? How do they make their voice stand out in a crowd?

  4. We need to make sure we are all out of the light when a scene is going on and we aren’t in it. I think everyone needs to work on their different voices and different reactions to each scene. We need to go over our scripts and see when we come in and out and when we are happy or sad. We all need to put in the work to make this show better. I know for sure that I’m going to be working hard on my character and my different voices. I want to make this show a success! I can’t wait to see what God has in store for us and this play!

  6. This clinic was a great way to start off the season! I think we really impresses even ourselves. Obviously we have a lot more to go but I hope we can really run with this momentum. The beginning of the season is always a battle but the more progress we see the easier it gets. We really need to focus on transitions and how to make the show look fluid... like water😂 really focus on what you do between EVERY scene. We need to get more familiar with the sequence of the play.

  8. This was not our best showing at all. We could have done so much better. At the moment, this is not a show that I am proud of. The story is beautiful and it has great bones, but we are not doing it justice. This play deserves so much better than what we are giving right now. We have got to start actually giving some type of effort because this is ridiculous.
